NASA Explorer School

Summer professional development workshops for teams of teachers and school administrators at the nine NASA Field Centers and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; one week of intensive training provides opportunities to begin integration of NASA content into existing school curricula and culminates in the development and implementation of action plans to meet local education challenges.

Ongoing research-based professional development during the school year, in collaboration with organizational partners and other federal agencies; this activity, coordinated by a network of teacher leaders and trainers, includes NASA aerospace education specialists, Space Grant consortia, educator resource centers and NASA Education networks.

Student programs that provide opportunities for active participation in research, problem solving and design challenges relating to NASA's missions and involve students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics explorations to encourage the use of scientific tools and methods; challenges will be grade-specific, supporting national and state standards. In addition, in-flight opportunities and competitions will provide access to unique NASA resources and personnel.

The NASA Explorer Schools Web site includes NASA resources; science, technology and mathematics investigations; collaborative tools; and opportunities to share student and school program results.

A grant to each school will support the purchase of technology tools, online services and inservice support for the integration of technology applications to engage students in science and mathematics investigations.

Family involvement in student educational growth, achievement and career exploration is the responsibility of the NES teams locally for school and home experiences developed in cooperation with NASA assets; online opportunities will be available through the NASA Explorer Schools Web site.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR HOUSING?

It varies different times of the year. Currently the wait is ­­0 to 14 Days, depending on your particular needs. It is always a good idea to apply for housing 30 to 60 days before arriving in New Orleans. Housing addresses can be assigned before your arrival. Housing assignments however can not be made until the DON Housing Office receives your application and refers you to Patrician Management.

WHAT SERVICES ARE INCLUDED FOR MY BAH PAYMENT?

Rent, all Utilities and Renter’s Insurance for your personal belongings. There is a Community Center on site at NAS which is available for parties and meetings to all residents at no charge. Reservations are available first come, first serve. Two lots are available for reserved parking of Boats, Trailers and RV’s at no charge. Parking by permit only, first come, first serve. Lawn and exterminating services are also provided at no additional charge.

CAN I BRING MY PET?

• Yes! Your furry friends are welcome!
• Two pets per household
• No weight limit
• Cats and dogs
• Certain canine breeds are prohibited

• Ferrets, snakes and exotic pets are prohibited (i.e. pets such as mice, hamsters, iguanas, etc.).

CAN I CHOOSE EITHER BASE FOR MY RESIDENCE REGARDLESS OF WHERE I WORK?

Yes, you may reside at Naval Air Station, Belle Chasse or Naval Support Activity, Algiers.

WHAT MONIES ARE DUE UPON LEASE SIGNING?

Active Duty Military. You may make your payment in one of several ways. If you choose to pay your rent by Allotment and/or EFT you will be required to start it at move in; the security deposit will be waived. If you choose to pay your rent by check you will be required to pay a security deposit equal to one month’s rent at the time of move in. . If you would like cable services, you will need a check for your first month of cable. Cable is currently $31.00 per month.

DoD Civilians. Prorated rent is due at the time of move in. A pet deposit will be required if you have a pet. If you would like cable services, you will need a check for your first month of cable. Cable is currently $31.00 per month.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR HOUSING?

Please call our office at 866-635-1911 and we will be happy to assist you in your transition. You will need to provide a copy of your Dependent Statement and your orders with a completed Housing Application. We can fax or email the Housing Application to you or you can obtain an application from your local housing office or by calling (504) 678-3280, (504) 678-3281 or (504) 678-2089. After completing the application, fax all of your documents to (504) 678-2403 or (504) 678-9565. These numbers are for the New Orleans DON Housing Office.
